Very few have ever heard of the Invader Medium Bomber, and for good reason. If not for a catastrophic mission failure in the early stages of the Galactic Civil War, the Invader and not the Y-wing would have become the bomber of choice for Rebel Alliance.
The Beginning
The Invader was first conceived from the Incom Corporation, but with the lead design teams’ defection to the Alliance, the Invader became all but forgotten in the wave of internal investigations. A lowly computer technician named Tavik Jandor (who happened to be a Rebel sympathizer) found the designs while he was looking through the Incom Main Computer banks. (It had been buried among hundreds of old reports and test files) Realizing he could make a fortune off of this forgotten design, he quit his tech job and went to the Arva System (located in the Colonies Region), where he had heard that the citizens of Arva VI had deposed of their Imperial governor and had pledged allegiance to the Rebellion.
Jandor approached the leaders of the Rebel insurgence forces, and presented the design. They decided to test the design, and had a squadron of six Invaders built by Arva Industries. When they had just been completed, however, the Imperials retook the Arva System, and forced the newly completed Invaders into hiding, along with the Rebel forces that remained.
The leader of the remaining Rebel forces was determined to strike a blow to the Imperials, which would once again turn the tables back in favor of the Rebels. He decided to stage a tandem assault on both the capital city of Arva VI, as well as an attack on the small Imperial occupational fleet left in orbit around Arva VI. (This consisted of an Imperial Corellian Gunship, as well as two squadrons of TIE fighters)
The Ill-Fated Battle of Arva VI
The Rebel assault was doomed from the start. Traitors from within the Rebel forces told the Imperials everything. The ground assault was ended when the main contingent of Rebels met up with an AT-AT, four AT-STs and an entire Stormtrooper company. Over half the rebels were captured, wounded or killed, while the rest fell back.
The squadron of Invaders took off from their hidden location on the western continent and made straight for the Imperial fleet. The screening line of 4 TIE fighters made first contact with the squadron of Invaders and half the TIEs were destroyed while the other TIEs withdrew. One Invader Bomber was heavily damaged and forced to return to the base. The other five pressed on toward the main target (the Gunship), which stood ready, its guns charged and its captain waiting for the attack.
In the space battle, the Corellian Gunship used its greater maneuverability to evade the unskilled Rebel gunners, while the TIE Fighters used their superiority in numbers and skill to butcher the remaining Invaders. All except the already damaged Invader was destroyed, with the Imperial suffering one TIE destroyed and two lightly damaged. The damaged Invader was hidden by the remaining Rebels, who went into hiding.
Aftermath
Jandor, who was being followed by Imperial Intelligence Agents, decided to steal the damaged Invader and take off for the Outer Rim, eventually settling on the colony world of Koill. After several years the Invader, remanufactured by RedStorm Industries (located solely on Koill) became the main defense force of the Koill colony, and has remained so ever since. When the New Republic retreated from the Reborn Emperor’s forces, Koill became an outpost for the New Republic. Several New Republic technicians studied the Invader and redesigned it to serve as a patrol fighter for backwater regions in the Outer Rim.
Historians have speculated on what might have changed if the Rebels had actually won the battle of Arva VI, and the Invaders gained acceptance in the early stages of the Galatic Civil War. But aside from the Arva conflict, the Invader design remains an average, but untested class.
Original Design
The Older Invader was designed to be a durable, heavy-hitting short-ranged bomber, staying close to its homeship (carrier, battleship, etc.) It lacked a fast hyperdrive and the necessary life support for long trips through hyperspace. Moderately fast and well shielded, the Invader could destroy any small ship (transport, fighter), while also being able to cripple a small capital ship.
New Design
Rediscovered on the backwater planet of Koill, the Invader was redesigned by New Republic Engineers, who placed a contract with RedStorm Industries and had RedStorm redesign many of the Invader’s features. By replacing the heavy-grade missile launcher with a Light Ion Cannon, fire-linking the laser cannons, replacing the old hyperdrive with a newer one, increasing its effective range, maneuverability and overall speed, it was perfectly suited now for patrolling the backwater systems of the Outer Rim. It also was able to seat 2 passengers, since it now could be manned by one person (1 crew, 2 passengers.)

I may have to snag this one and try and draw it up for ya. I'd love to compile our own little Starships of the Galaxy expansion. |
