Mynock-class Starfighter
16 January 2004
Author: johnpatrickmcp
The Mynock-class fighter was the first design of the Savion Engineering Corporation. It was the first starfighter designed not for military use but for civilians. The design proved to be so popular that the profits turned the SEC from a small backwater company to the megacorp it is today. When the Empire came to power one of the first things they did was to clamp down on the availability of military grade hardware to civilians. While this tactic was aimed at keeping the tools of revolution out of the peoples hands it also meant that merchants were left relatively defenseless against pirates and rebels. The problem was that since it was against the law to own powerful weapons, only the outlaws had them. While there were huge surpluses of old Z-95 headhunters they were no match for rebel starfighters. They also required huge amounts of paperwork to obtain and manpower to maintain.
About this time a young tech by the name of Jaret Savion had just started his starship repair business. One of his first jobs was for a corellian merchant who wanted to modify four headhunters with special docking clamps. Since the headhunters he had purchased were not hyperdrive equipped the idea was for them to magnetically attach themselves to a transport and eliminate the need to add hanger space. As Jaret was doing the modification he started to realize what an interesting idea this was. Since it would not be hyperspace capable it would be cheap and easier to get past strict government regulations on starfighters. Also since you wouldn’t need to convert valuable cargo space to hanger space it would be very attractive to merchants. So as business went on Savion began dumping most of his profits into developing this new idea.
One year and a few hundred thousand credits later the prototype was ready to fly. Since the ship would have to go long periods in hyperspace he gave the ship a large cabin (for a starfighter anyway) that contained a bunk and refresher station that the two person crew would have to share. It was armed with two laser cannons (salvaged from a TIE fighter), a turret mounted ion cannon (salvaged from a Y-wing) and a concussion missile launcher (salvaged from a Z-95 headhunter). Since survivability was a main concern the hull was double reinforced making it more durable than most light freighters and the most powerful shields legally available. The Mynock is powered by a single Akrayd engine from a Y-wing and supplemented with wing mounted twin ion engines (salvaged from a TIE fighter). Despite this the ship is only about as fast as a headhunter is. Mounted to the underside of the hull is a specially designed docking tube that allowed the fighter to magnetically attach itself to a mother ship. It was designed to either interface with a standard airlock (this was the preferred method because it allowed the Mynock’s crew to spend the hyperspace flight inside the mother ship) or simply lock down to a flat area of the ship’s hull.
To test the ship Jaret left his shop in the hands of one of his assistant and spent the next six months as a freelance pilot. The ship preformed admirably, it was able to withstand great amounts of punishment as well as racking up an impressive list of kills. It was during this time that the ship got it’s name. On one run, as the mother ship came out of hyperspace the docking authority told them that they had the biggest mynock he had ever seen attached to his ship, and the name just stuck. Ever the businessman he would hire the ship out to merchants for the next to nothing, usually only enough to cover his expenses. Then once the run was over and the cargo safely at its destination he would deliver the sales pitch. By the time he returned to the shop he had advanced orders for over a hundred fighters.   Within a year word of mouth had spread and the orders showed no sign of stopping.

TonyxI just came across this and I was impressed with the idea. It is something I have toyed with some in my games. I like the back story as it adds to the character of the ship.
DarionA'resVery detailed back story that gels very well with the Star Wars Universe. I'm with Cheshire, we need more starfighters and ships all around the books are all the same old stuff and quite a limited re [ . . . ]
PsychoInfiltratorGreat backstory.
